Generative engine optimization (GEO)

The same discipline as AEO under a second name: making a site quotable by systems that generate answers instead of listing links.

Updated

Generative engine optimization is a second name for the work AEO describes: shaping a site so that a system generating prose about a topic generates prose that names you.

The two terms arrived within months of each other and most people who use either use them interchangeably. Where a distinction is drawn at all, GEO tends to mean the generated-paragraph surface specifically — an assistant writing an answer — while AEO is used for the wider family that also covers featured snippets and voice results. Nothing about the work changes when you switch words.

It is worth knowing both, because vendors, conference tracks and job listings pick between them inconsistently, and because a page optimised for one is optimised for the other. If someone offers a method that works for GEO but not AEO, the useful question is which check it changes.
